Creativity belongs to humans alone

Exploring generative AI artwork
‘Creativity Belongs to Humans Alone’ was an exhibition hosted in September 2021 that aimed to question the current discourse surrounding the role of Artificial Intelligence, and explore whether or not current AI technologies are competent enough to truly supersede or extend human creative practice. We showcased the work of local Pōneke artists’ and used machine learning algorithms to reimagine their respective outputs.

Web Design

I developed the website to showcase the artists original artworks and to show how StyleGAN interpreted their work to produce new results. I tried something a bit different for this site, with a horizontal scrolling navigation.

All 9 artworks were produced by StyleGAN, a generative AI algorithm. The source material used to train the AI was based on reference material supplied from each artist.
Hanging on the left, viewers can see the original source material supplied by each artist. That gives context to the AI generated works on the right.
StyleGAN outputs results as a video, so we wanted to showcase it front and center in the exhibition space.
While guests browsed the exhibition, they could read about our influences for the project, as well as about the 3 artists work.

Augmented Reality

I used Augmented Reality to prototype form quicker than building real life models, for instance times that I couldn't be in the workshop. I used Fusion 360 to model my designs, and Substance Painter to texture them. Finally, I exported them as a .USDZ file and can share to people to be visualised in their own spaces, in life size. AR mode only works on iPhones and iPad.
